Causes of Mold in Your Heating and Air Conditioning System
The two major causes of mold in your air conditioning system are condensation and organic material. Condensation occurs when parts of your air conditioning system get cold, especially when the surrounding air in the room is warm and humid.
For example, if your basement tends to be humid and the air ducts get cold while the air is blowing, the water vapor in the room can begin to condense on the air duct, creating a small amount of water. If the humidity is low enough, the water will quickly evaporate once the a/c turns off. If the humidity is too high, then the water will persist and that’s when you begin to have a mold problem.
Air conditioning systems tend to collect dust, both in the unit itself and within the air ducts. Dust contains all kinds of organic material, such as pollen and dead skin cells, which is essentially food for mold. Combined with a damp environment, this creates a great place for mold to grow.

Health Benefits
You may have heard something about the potential health hazards that can lurk deep in the ductwork of your home air conditioning/heating system. You’ve probably also wondered if the threat of dirty air ducts is overblown.
To a large degree, whether or not there’s something dangerous growing in your ducts depends on a number of factors. The cleanliness and age of your home and your HVAC system is important, as well as the air quality in the surrounding environment.
Some of these are things which you can control, others are entirely out of your hands. If you’re concerned about the state of the ductwork in your home and the possibility of health problems due to contaminants present in your HVAC system, you may at least want to consider having your ducts inspected by the qualified heating and cooling technicians at SUPERIOR DUCT CLEANING LLC
How do you know if you need to call in an expert?
Let’s start with the facts: many HVAC systems, especially older or poorly maintained systems, can act as a reservoir for dust, bacteria, mold and other fungi. Some of these contaminants are relatively benign, assuming that no one in your household is allergic. Others can pose a serious health risk and have a dramatic negative impact on indoor air quality in your home.
While the environmental conditions aren’t the same in any two homes, there are a few signs to look for. If you spot any of these it’s probably time to call SUPERIOR DUCT CLEANING LLC to have your home’s air conditioning/heating system inspected for mold and other potentially pathogenic contaminants.
- Development of allergies or the flare up of existing allergies
- Illness among members of your household with no obvious cause
- Visible dust and dirt on and around your home’s air vents*
- Visible growth of mold on or around air vents
- A musty odor coming from your HVAC system
Dust gathering on return registers is a normal occurrence and doesn’t necessarily mean that your heating and cooling system’s ducts need to be cleaned, but if they seem to get dusty abnormally fast, then it could be a sign that your ductwork is in need of a cleaning.
There are definite benefits to having your ductwork cleaned periodically. It can clean out deposits of dust, pollen and other environmental contaminants in the system, which can result in a cleaner home overall and may well reduce the frequency and severity of allergy symptoms if anyone in your household has allergies. As long as it’s performed by HVAC professionals, air duct cleaning can be beneficial and give you and everyone else in your household some peace of mind.
